From Julieanne Pogue:
Pre-Rehearsal Thoughts, January 1, 2008
I’ve spent this time of the holidays saying the lines over and over to let the elegance of the cadence settle in. Also, in researching the period dress, hair, and customs. In preparation for the inevitable corset, I’ve rented that and a skirt from the University in which to rehearse. I don’t want a repeat of what happened at Actors Theater of Louisville during dress rehearsal of “Cyrano de Bergerac” where, for THE FIRST BLOODY TIME, I was made to wear a corset so constricting as to make me pass out onstage. I can still remember thinking that this is what fainting couches were made to accommodate.
I practiced stairs and chairs and patterns with the admirable and ever-knowledgeable Bob Haven at U.K. to get used to the idea that consciousness of movement must co-exist with timing, lines, and pace. In the same “Cyrano”, I also fell ignominiously upon my face going UP the vomb onto the raked stage, having neatly stepped on my petticoat on the first step. It was a rehearsal, no one SAW it, but I was mortified.
Tomorrow we “stumble through” Act One, books in hand. After that, we will gradually dispense with the books – rather sooner than later, it is to be hoped – and focus on the action.
I’m excited, but off book only through roughly 1/3. We must slog along daily through this most tedious but necessary drill.
When Laura and Gina met with me over the holidays to make a rehearsal tape for my car, the readings were lively and different, beginning to take on a whimsical quality. I laughed myself silly at lines I had not heard as funny previously, to the point of nearly ruining my tape!
Most of all, I am excited to be getting back to the rehearsal hall.
