From Adam Luckey
The first weekend is over. Thank God. Granted, I had an enjoyable opening weekend, but the strain and exhaustion began to take its toll and I am sure I am not the only one who is glad to have a few days off from Hamlet. Gail, Kirby, and Al are back in Fairfax, Scott is in Ohio for a few days, Tommy and Brett finally have time to do a little homework, Kyle doesn’t have to drive into town for a while, and the rest of the cast and crew can get back to their daily lives without the shadow of opening weekend looming over them. As Mike said, “What a long, strange trip it’s been.” Yes, sir. You are correct.
Let me get back to being exhausted. Hamlet is demanding. I have noticed how physical and mental exhaustion overtook me this weekend. The physical exhaustion seemed to manifest itself with me garbling a few of my words here and there, but especially in transposing letters. For example, instead of “blush and grace of modesty” I said “grush and blace of modesty.” What the hell? And instead of “blessing to be begged” I said “bessing to be blegged.” Both of these came in the closet scene with Gertrude, which is a tough scene in itself. Ranting and raving, I found myself completely spent and my mouth seemed to have a mind of its own. I don’t attribute it to laziness. I attribute it to tiredness. But still, I should have attempted to keep my focus a little more. But I look at it as a learning experience. I now know what my brain and body does when they find themselves running out of steam. Of course, the biggest test is going to be performing this at 10 am for high school students on Thursday. But I am pretty confident that with 3 days rest, I’ll be ready to “put an antic disposition” back on.
I should be sleeping, instead of writing, so let me get back to doing what I should. And if you haven’t come down to check Hamlet out, please make the plans. One way or another, it will certainly give you stuff to talk about. And the guy who plays the ghost is pretty creepy.
