Greetings all and Happy Holidays!!
While I am sure everyone is getting ready for the joys of the season (I am travelling to Dallas with my family), here at AGL,we are already hard at work on our first show of the Spring season. The GREAT GREAT GREAT American playwright David Mamet has crafted a witty and biting comedy about two bantering, scheming "women of fashion" who have long lived together on the fringes of upper class society. The play is called Boston Marriage and represents Mamet's first serious foray into writing dialogue for women. The prolific author of plays such as GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS, AMERICAN BUFFALO, OLEANNA, and SEXUAL PERVERSITY IN CHICAGO; as well as screenplays such as THE VERDICT, WAG THE DOG, THE UNTOUCHABLES and THE SPANISH PRISONER has long been accused of being a writer who can only write for men. BOSTON MARRIAGE refutes that claim.
What is a "BOSTON MARRIAGE"? "Boston Marriage" was a term used in the 19th and 20th centuries for households where two women lived together, independent of any male support. These relationships were not necessarily sexual; the existence of platonic Boston Marriages was used to quell fears of lesbianism following the loss of men in World War I. Today, the term is sometimes used when referring to two women living together who are not in a sexual relationship. Such a relationship may have intimacy and commitment, without sexuality. The term came to be used, apparently, after Henry James' book THE BOSTONIANS detailed a marriage-like relationship between two women -- "New Women" in the language of the time, women who were independent, not married, self-supporting (which sometimes meant living off inherited wealth or making a living as writers or other professional, educated careers).
To this wickedly funny comedy, Mamet brings his trademark tart dialogue and impeccable timing, spiced with Oscar Wilde-type wit.
BOSTON MARRIAGE will preview on January 30 and run through February 24, 2008. Directed by Jack Parrish, who returns to AGL after directing 2004's comedic gem ART and fresh of his acclaimed portrayal of Polonius and the Grave Digger in Hamlet; BOSTON MARRIAGE features Julieanne Pogue (last seen in ANTON IN SHOW BUSINESS and THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST) , Gina Scott-Lynaugh (last seen in Steve Martin's THE UNDERPANTS), and AGL associate artist Laura Blake (last seen in TARTUFFE and FULLY COMMITTED).
As we did with HAMLET, I have asked company members to consider keeping journals and we will be posting their thoughts and experiences from time to time on my blog. Julieanne's the first one and hers will be posted momentarily.
In the meantime, remember this is your final weekend to see our fantastic musical SHE LOVES ME, which closes this Sunday. And AGL gift certificates make the perfect last minute gift. Contact the box office for more info at 859-225-0370.
WISHING YOU AND YOURS A SAFE HAPPY AND HEALTHY HOLIDAY SEASON!!!
Peace and Love
